In this issue, the article by Conner-Spady et al. reports on sentinel work that was done to establish the Canadian cataract surgery wait-time benchmark. In 2004, the federal and provincial first ministers agreed to a transfer of dollar5.5 billion to try to shorten waiting times in 5 key areas. As part of that agreement, money was allocated to the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) to synthesize the literature and help to develop evidence-based benchmarks. This article summarizes the findings from one of the CIHR studies commissioned to examine wait times for cataract surgery. The same literature review was undertaken by the Canadian Ophthalmological Society's Council on Provincial Affairs (CPA). This effort led to a recommendation of a 16-week cataract surgery wait-time benchmark that was ultimately endorsed by the Wait Time Alliance.2 Conner-Spady et al. conducted a comprehensive review of literature pertaining to wait times. They examined all of the appropriate bibliographic databases and developed a strong assessment tool to ensure that the articles tliat they were reviewing were appropriate and of high quality.
